The Sunday Seven is a vaguely regular series where we share seven things that are on our radar in some way. They might be articles we enjoyed reading, a new food we’ve become obsessed with, a television show we need to talk about, or a new product we’ve discovered. There’s really no rhyme or reason – just think of it as our casual Sunday chat.
1 – The Office – I have to start this post off with a show I’ve become fully, and utterly obsessed with. I know – I’m WAY late to the party on this one. I honestly can’t explain why I never watched before. I had seen episodes here and there, but had never seen the series all the way though. Let me tell you, I am SO glad that I am finally doing just that. I’m just starting season six as we speak and OMG – this show is so good!! It’s painfully stupid, hilarious and at some points even sweet and heartwarming. I’m honestly surprised at the layers to this show, and just how much I’ve grown to like it. I’m definitely a big fan now. I’m just sorry it took me so long to become one. Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.
2 – Tiger Balm White – this might seem like an odd thing to mention, but this little tub of magic has proved itself to be quite an asset for when I’m suffering from a migraine. I picked this up from an Asian market because I had heard my mom talk about the red version of Tiger Balm quite frequently, and didn’t even know there was any other kind. The jar said something about headaches and that was really all I needed to know. I’m always on the search for something that might help with my migraines and/or headaches and so far, this stuff has been nothing short of amazing. It’s super cooling and it sort of feels like it numbs my head and while the pain might not totally go away, it helps to take the edge off. If you suffer from tension headaches or sinus headaches like I do, I find this stuff particularly helpful for those, but it has also helped me loads during a migraine attack. The only complain that I have is that while the little jar is super adorable (maybe I’m just weird), it can be hard to get product out without getting it under your nails. It’s still worth it though!
3 – Graphic Novels – I’ve started to dip my toe into the massive waters that are graphic novels and so far, I’ve really been enjoying myself. I’ve been in a bit of a rut reading wise and I needed something to give me a boost out of it. Graphic novels have been the perfect answer to my problem because they’re so easy to devour! So far I’ve read the entire Paper Girls series, and the first Saga book. I obviously need to widen my reading beyond one author (no offense to Brian K. Vaughan), and I would LOVE YOUR SUGGESTIONS if you’ve got any! Particularly any female authors or POC authors would be excellent. I can definitely see myself diving deeper into the world of Graphic Novels and Comics because it’s such a lovely escape from academic reading that I get plenty of as a grad student.
4 – Doritos Spicy Sweet Chili – Of all the things I’ve mentioned so far on this list, this must seem like the true oddball. But trust me – these Doritos are SOOOO GOOD!! I’ve been craving something Dorito like for awhile now, but since I stopped eating dairy (oh how I miss thee) months ago, I haven’t been able to give in to this particular craving: until now. These Doritos are actually vegan, making them a go for me! They’re definitely spicy, but honestly, I love them (they are salty though, so I make sure to drink plenty of water with them)! This might sound crazy, but I feel like I can handle spice way more than I could when I used to eat dairy. Maybe its all in my head, or maybe there’s some science behind it. If you’ve got the answer, let me know! Either way, I’m so glad I came across these (and that Doritos makes them!! Please don’t stop)!
5 – Modest Mouse – this is a band that I’ve liked for years now, but recently they’ve been the music I’m enjoying while I work. I actually struggle to be productive with music on, but for some reason I find that I almost work better when I’ve got Modest Mouse on in the background. I’m particularly enjoying their The Moon & Antarctica album (especially Tiny Cities Made of Ashes…..so freaking good).
6 – DuoLingo – I’ve been using this app for the past few months nearly every single day. I had a streak of like 60 something days until I accidentally missed a day and got pretty pissed at myself if I’m totally honest (I had gotten so far!!). But in the past few months, I’ve only missed a couple of days overall, which isn’t too bad for a new habit. I’m currently working on Italian and really enjoying the app. Definitely not the most popular language, but being of Italian heritage, it’s always been a language I’ve wanted to learn. I took Latin in High School and I think that has actually been helpful even all of these (many) years later. I find the app really easy to use and would suggest anyone looking to try a language, to try it out! I’m currently only using the free version, but so far it’s been great. I do miss they hadn’t changed the formatting so much with their recent big update. I found the percent fluent to be really motivating (even if it was potentially inaccurate) – it always pushed me to spend even more time in the app!
7 – Ticket To Ride – last but not least for this week is a game that I bought ages ago, but never got around to playing. Ticket To Ride is a strategy board game where you set out to create and “own” as many train routes on a particular map as you can in order to beat your opponents. We have the United States board and honestly, I’m so ready to play on some of the other maps available. This game is so much freaking fun! We’ll be sharing a more thorough review of the game on the blog very soon so I’ll leave it at that for now.
Well that’s it for the inaugural Sunday Seven, I hope everyone had a good weekend and that you have a great week ahead! Let me know what you’ve been enjoying in the comments!
