Sunday Thoughts #1

onedayatatime

I stopped doing favorites posts for a few reasons. Some months I just didn’t have much to talk about. Sometimes my favorites were the same as past months and I didn’t want to be redundant. I didn’t really make a conscious decision to stop doing monthly favorites posts, they just sort of fizzled out. But aside from just sharing every little thing on Twitter, I’ve sort of missed having a regular place to share things I’ve been reading/watching/eating and just simply, enjoying.

So I thought I could start up something here on the blog – nothing fancy, and not exactly a favorites list per se. No rhyme or reason, and in all honesty, no consistency. I might do these weekly, monthly, or once and never again. We’ll just have to see. For now, let’s just get into what’s been on my mind lately:

source-3

SHRILL – My lovely sister recently signed up for a Hulu membership, and set me up with a Roku, and I’ve been LOVING IT!! I’m pretty upset with Netflix right now, so I’ve been seriously enjoying all that Hulu has to offer. When I first heard about Shrill, I was intrigued but I wasn’t sure if I’d ever watch because I really wasn’t down for signing up for yet another streaming platform. Missy’s timing couldn’t have been more perfect because I was able to watch this new show and I honestly loved it so so so much.

I’m not sure how to even put my love for this show into words. It really made me feel some shit. Happy for such a wonderful show. Sad for my own struggle with acceptance and body positivity. Ecstatic to see what I was seeing, in a TV show. See – I still can barely articulate my feelings. Just know that the show is great and you should seriously watch it. I hope Hulu gives us more.

I said that I’m mad at Netflix right now, and that’s because they decided to cancel One Day at a Time after three wonderful, glorious, beautiful, emotional, seasons. They claim it wasn’t getting enough views. I say claim because Netflix doesn’t share their data. I’m sorry, but call me a skeptic, but I don’t buy it. First off – you can get data on any network show easily. The fact that Netflix doesn’t share their data is just plain dumb, and it bothers me. How do we ever know the truth regarding their content? Great for them, but crap for writers/actors/viewers/anyone else.

Beyond that, even if the show wasn’t doing well ratings wise, I’d say that Netflix has themselves to blame. I only first heard about One Day at a Time because I was doing research for a paper I was writing and was talking about Norman Lear. I then ran across an article discussing how there was a remake of One Day at a Time. I was on Netflix all the time and never once did I ever see anything about this show. I watched immediately and fell in love, but ever since, I’ve been quite aware of how shit Netflix has been when it comes to promoting this show. So to say they weren’t getting ratings, I feel you can put all the blame on yourself, Netflix.

giphy

Because when they cancelled the show, #SaveODAAT was trending GLOBALLY for HOURS on twitter. Since the announcement tons of people have voiced their anger and sadness. People have come together to fight for the show to be picked up elsewhere, including Lin Manuel Miranda (how can you say no to him?!?) and fans of Brooklyn Nine Nine who successfully fought and found a new home for their show when it was cancelled (a show that is on my list to watch now that I’ve got Hulu).

I seriously hope that some network comes through and saves this show. We need more of these characters and their stories. We need the diversity and the representation. Shame on Netflix – a company that keeps triggering shows like 13 Reasons Why and cancels shows like ODAAT which beautifully, and honestly tackled mental health in a way I have never seen done before. CBS could pick up the show since they had the original. NBC saved Brooklyn Nine Nine, so I could see them saving the day again. I personally think One Day at a Time would fit wonderfully into a comedy block on ABC with Speechless (which is yet another show I’ve started watching and have fallen for hard, so please – #RenewSpeechless). One Day at a Time is honestly a show that I would follow and watch anywhere. If you haven’t seen the show yet, get on Netflix and watch the first three seasons!! Trust me, it’s beyond worth it.

I recently ordered some goodies from this wonderful Etsy shop called Hand Over Your Fairy Cakes and thank you brain fog because I totally forgot about it until it showed up in my mail box one day. Not only was it adorably packaged with confetti and sweets – but my pins and stickers are even better than I imagined. I love how bright and happy her designs are, in combination with the messages they display! I can’t wait to put the pins on my bag. The hard part is going to be deciding where to slap the stickers!

I recently read this article about some of the issues with AirPods and I only feel more vindicated in my hatred of this product. I’m sorry, but I will NEVER pay over $100 for a pair of headphones that I will definitely lose somewhere. Beyond that, I think they look stupid and apparently their battery life is shit. My corded headphones? They have infinite battery life. šŸ˜‰

Lastly, while I’ve been incredibly stressed and overwhelmed by grad school this semester, I’ve been finding comfort in two things recently: The Goldbergs (thank you again, Hulu), and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

giphy-1

I started watching The Goldbergs in reruns on TV Land because Hallmark has lost their mind and ruined their sitcom schedule (perhaps now that they broke up with Aunt Becky they could fix their schedule? I bet they’ve got space to fill…). At first I honestly wasn’t sure what I thought of the show, but it warmed up on me and now I’m really enjoying watching from the beginning. I’m only in season 2 now, but it’s really good. I am forever impressed by shows that are set in a specific time period and their attention to details in order to make that aspect believable. The Goldbergs is an excellent example of that. I’m loving the 80s vibes of this show.

When I first heard about Nintendo’s new system I was super intrigued. So of course, when it was released, I ran right out and got it. ….yeah, no. I’m nothing if not consistent, and that consistency includes being super late to the party with new tech. I picked up a Nintendo Switch last week, along with Stardew Valley and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I played a bit of Stardew and I basically gave up because I was having trouble doing things in the game and it was pissing me off (help?!). Zelda however, I’m LOVING!!! It’s such a gorgeous game and I love the flexibility and freedom which is always something that I’m drawn to in a game. I’ve only just begun to play the game so I’m not too far into it but I’m really, really, enjoying it. It’s been the perfect escape after working on giant papers for school. I also love the fact that when I feel like crap, the Switch is the perfect system for playing in bed. I’m a huge simmer, but there’s been plenty of times where it’s just too uncomfortable to sit at my desk to play. The Switch feels like the system I’ve been missing.

If you’ve got any game recs for me, please let me know! I’m eagerly waiting for Animal Crossing to be released for switch, but beyond that I’m not sure what games I should be looking into.

Alright, I’ve definitely rambled on long enough. Feel free to tell me what you’ve been enjoying lately in the comments. What have you been reading/watching/playing?

First Impressions — THE SIMS 4 GET FAMOUS

Lights, camera, action!! The latest expansion pack for The Sims 4 dropped yesterday with Get Famous and it’s packing all the star power. The expansion pack brings fame and glory to our Sims as they are introduced to the magical realm of celebrity and the entertainment industry. While there is certainly glitz and glamour with the new gameplay possibilities, one of the real stars for me is the newest content in Create-A-Sim and Build/Buy mode.

Create-A-Sim:

The new clothing and accessory options are stunning for their amount of detail and gorgeousĀ color swatches and patterns in both modern fashion pieces and in pieces that seem to be vintage-inspired (the dream of the 90s is alive in Get Famous). While a lot of the pieces connect to film genres (most notably western), the clothing brilliantly represents the shimmer and shine of Old Hollywood fashions fit for your Audreys and Marilyns while also providing options for your non-thespian Sims. The accessories and hats aren’t too shabby either with hat options that pair with over-the-ear headphones along with some themed hat options, accessories such as a shiny new wristwatch, necklace, and pair of earrings.

Build/Buy Mode:

The options in build/buy mode presented in Get Famous is a blend of a sort of gildedĀ series of pieces that give me Rococo vibesĀ and Mid-Century pieces that continue where The Sims 4 Bowling Night Stuff started. I’m going to be honest – I absolutely LOVE Mid-Century architecture and furniture so when I saw the latest pieces from this pack, I was in love. I don’t personally see myself using too much of the Rococo-style pieces (although it would be perfect for a castle build with those fancy new texture tools), but that’s not to say they aren’t incredible!! One of my absolute favorite pieces from this expansion hands-down would be the new GrammyPhone Radiogram Mid-Century stereo cabinet. I’ve been hoping for a better stereo so when I spotted this new stereo in action as the vinyl record spun, my heart was over the moon in love (seriously, thank you Sim Gurus)!! The build mode objects we were given are equally awesome with the adorable selection of Quaint Cottage Sash WindowsĀ and Stable As A Brick Column (theĀ brick column of my building dreams).

Overall, The Sims 4 Get Famous gets on the A-List for its gorgeous new clothes and objects alone. And that’s not even including the outrageous new gameplay that your Sims can now indulge in as they become the stars of stage and screen! You can snag the latest expansion pack with The Sims 4 Get Famous today in the Origin app or here. Are you a fan of this star-studded expansion pack? Let’s Sim – Sims 4 Build – Brindleton Bay Library

This summer, the library system in my county has been running a reading passport contest where people are encouraged to visit the various library branches around the county in order to potentially win prizes. I have knocked a few of the branches off the list and in the process, I’ve enjoyed the architecture of the different buildings I’ve visited. It doesn’t take much for my mind to wander into thinking of ideas for The Sims – it pretty much happens whenever I leave the house. I decided to challenge myself into making a library, but not just any kind of library… a TREEHOUSE library!

One of my favorite types of constructions are treehouses – I used to dream about having one as a kid and I love the Animal Planet show Treehouse Masters with treehouse aficionado Pete Nelson so I thought I would combine my love of treehouses and my make the ultimate library.

I opted to place it in Brindleton Bay because it fits the cozy aesthetic that I get from the town as a whole. The lot that it is on is the 40×30-sized Tail’s End lot originally labeled as residential located in the Whiskerman’s Wharf not far from the Brindleton Bay docks. It really provides a stellar view of the water and the nearby docks while the treeline, especially with the addition of Seasons, makes it really pop!

Okay, no more rambling, let’s just get to the build, shall we??

Worlds I’d like to see in Kingdom Hearts 3

With the news of Kingdom Hearts 3 being released in January 2019, it got me to thinking of what I’d like to see brought to one of my favorite game series. I’m currently replaying my way through the first game and it’s easy for me to fall in love all over again with the perfect fusion of the Disney universe and the Final Fantasy lineage. It honestly just feeds my geekdom because there are layers of things to nerd out about in a way that’s unique in the world of video games. I’ve been a big Disney fan since I was a young Warthog in the early 90s (When the best Disney films were made). Couple that with being a video game lover and it’s a perfect nerdy marriage. Here are the worlds that I’d like to see brought to Kingdom Hearts!!

Star Wars

The massive Disney empire now owns the rights to Lucasfilm for the cool tune of about 4 billion dollars after their 2012 purchase and has since added Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to both Disney parks. With the continuation of the Star Wars storylines, I think an abridged Star Wars world could make compelling gameplay for Kingdom Hearts and Star Wars lovers alike. Would it be hard to condense such an expansive storyline featured in the Star Wars universe? Yes of course, but picture this – Sora, Donald, and Goofy adorned in Star Wars inspired costumes. In similar fashion to the Deep Jungle Tarzan world, the world could allow the player to select between a character (perhaps a longstanding character such as Luke Skywalker) or Goofy and Donald. The Heartless could be stylized to fight alongside Stormtroopers perhaps with a minor boss battle with Darth Vader or another Sith character. The options for a Star Wars level are numerous and I think if done well that it could provide something for nerds like me to really oogle over.

The Sims 4 Seasons – REVIEW

Holy crap – it’s finally here!! I honestly can’t believe that we finally have seasons for The Sims 4!! We wrote a post about Seasons when we first heard that we were getting it, but today’s post is going to be so much better. Why? BECAUSE WE HAVE PLAYED IT!!

Now we’re gonna be honest here – we had the best of intentions and initially wanted to get this post out into the world WAY sooner than this. However, this game is just massive compared to other expansions and we felt that we really needed to give it a good play period before giving you our thoughts. Unfortunately, there are also a good deal of glitches, and we’d be lying if we didn’t acknowledge them or how they delayed our reviews as well. Both Melissa and myself lost games and had issues that led to us starting all over again (a few times), so there are definitely some hiccups. It was important to us that we experience all four seasons before writing this too because otherwise, that just wouldn’t make any sense! So now that we’ve justified the delay in this post (to ourselves more than anything), lets get into it!

Games To Play: CodyCross – REVIEW

I was hanging out with a friend when I first heard about this game CodyCross. I could hear the noises from it and was curious to see what game he was playing. He then showed me his phone screen and I was mystified as I was admittedly a little surprised that he’d opt for a puzzle game but also definitely intrigued to try my hand at another puzzle game!! I’m always down for a puzzle game (save for Words With Friends for which I have a love-hate relationship as it has evolved into Words with Frenemies) so when I saw him playing CodyCross, I quickly hopped onto the Apple App Store and snagged this free game!! It is worth saying here that the game is also available for free on Android devices should you not be on Team Apple.

My Sims 4 Building Wishlist

With the announcement that Simmers can expect glass roofs in the next game patch, it got me to thinking about some of the other build tools and objects I would like to see come to the game. I’ve been a simmer since the inaugural game The Sims and I am impressed so far with the progress made in The Sims 4, but I am hopeful to see some of my favorite architectural techniques added to the game. I personally love building in the game because it provides me a chance to build my dream house (You know, without having to win the lottery and all that). Here are some building aspects I would absolutely jump for joy over if added to The Sims 4.
