Double Vision: Sitcoms & the Great Recasting

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before – you’re watching a TV show and you notice that one actor who was on the show in its first few seasons, is back as somebody else. Well, I recently noticed this with Golden Girls when in one of the episodes Rose was dating a guy named Arnie Peterson who looked really familiar. Turns out the character was played by Harold Gould who would go on to portray another of Rose’s love interests with Miles Webber. A whole dissertation could be devoted to the way Golden Girls reuses actors or has several actors playing the same characters, but it’s not just Golden Girls that I’ve picked up on this, it’s sort of a whole thing…

Why I Hated The Last Season of The Office

So I’m probably one of the last people out there to watch The Office (what can I say I’ve been living under a rock), but it was one of my goals for the new year to finish watching every single episode of the show which spanned the course of nine seasons. I started watching the show around the time I was finishing my undergrad and I quickly understood why it’s such a favorite. But I have to admit that in contrast to prior seasons, the last season just wasn’t as good in my opinion. Hear me out – it wasn’t all bad, but there were definitely things I thought could’ve been better about this cult favorite show’s final season.

The Bad, The Good and The Ugly

First off, I really hated the way that Andy just up and left everyone (especially Erin) to be on a boat/in the Bahamas for three months! I know comedic writing makes sure to incorporate the foibles of characters, but it just seems rude that Andy would make such a profound misstep after telling Erin that he loved her, by acting like such a jerk during season nine. One of my other gripes about the last season were the conflicts between Jim and Pam. I really felt uncomfortable with the way Jim was splitting his time between Philly working for his company Athlead, and working in Scranton part-time at Dunder Mifflin. All while Pam was left to hold down the fort as a single mother. I was conflicted – I wanted Jim to follow his dreams, but also I could see the strain being put on Pam and felt sympathetic for her. Especially as there were several moments during the season that I felt Jim was being really dickish to Pam unnecessarily (say for failing to get a video of Cece’s ballet recital)! I just felt like after watching Andy and Jim for so long, they suddenly were acting completely out of character. Here were two guys who at one point, would have done anything for the women they loved. Everyone is entitled to their missteps in life but it just felt like too much. Long gone were the twelve days of Christmas and teapots with secret love notes.

It was hard (that’s what she said) to watch the ninth season with the roller coaster ride that Angela and Dwight’s story lines had become in the final season. Angela finds out that Robert is cheating on her with Oscar, but she continues a short lived facade of a happy marriage to The Senator. Dwight then asks Angela for assistance caring for his elderly aunt as the two reconnect, but any hopes of the two reuniting are squashed by Angela’s mention of her husband Robert. Dwight soon ends up romantically pursuing his neighbor Esther while Angela’s marriage to Robert continues to unravel when during a televised press conference he comes out as gay. The results end up providing one of the sweetest moments from Oscar as he offers a place to stay after Angela is evicted.  It’s difficult because you just know that Angela and Dwight belong together!! The will they, won’t they of their relationship extends dangerously close to the end of the final season. I’m just happy there was a happy ending, or this entire post would be one long bitch about how they belong together!

Another area of frustration for me was the warehouse mural. Pam’s artistic skill is so underappreciated throughout the show and few really seem to acknowledge it (I’m still a little choked up from Michael’s reaction to Pam’s paintings in the Season Three episode “Business School”) so when someone defaced the mural (with butts, really?!?) that she was working on in the warehouse it really bugged me, but then we find out who did it. Is it just me or does Brad William Henke (who portrays new warehouse worker Frank) play the whole douchey antagonistic type of character really well as evident by his character in Orange Is The New Black? Things were definitely made better when we were provided another sweet instance of Pam and Dwight teaming up as they painted on his truck together. It can’t be said enough – Dwight and Pam’s friendship throughout the show is seriously underappreciated!!

This might be controversial, but for me, one of the highlights of season nine was the exit of Ryan Howard’s character. I did miss the sass that Mindy Kaling’s Kelly Kapoor brought to Dunder Mifflin, but I’m not going to lie – I absolutely couldn’t stand Ryan so I may have clapped when it was mentioned by Toby that he had left (sorry, not sorry)!!

The 12 Episodes of Christmas: 12 Must-See Sitcoms for the Holidays

Can you believe there are only eight days until Christmas? That means that there are only eight days to figure out last-minute gifts, wrap them, and perhaps most sad to me – only a few days left of my new favorite Moser Roth chocolate truffle advent calendar. One of my favorite things to do during the holiday season is giving myself the gift of some self-care and R&R (rest and relaxation) and that’s definitely true this year after wrapping up my first semester of grad school. I can’t think of a better way to relax than kicking back with my sitcoms (unless you add some advent truffles into the mix). Before you set out cookies and milk for the Big Man, here are the 12 Episodes of Christmas to get you in the holly jolly mood!

Frasier – “Perspectives On Christmas” (S5, Ep. 9)

This episode shows how things go awry for many of the characters through the course of one week leading up to the holidays, but arguably one of the best parts is the late John Mahoney attempting to sing “O Holy Night”.

Monthly Favorites – June 2018

Monthly Favorites! I know, they’re not the most inventive posts around, but even after all these years, I still enjoy watching and reading them. I enjoy knowing what others have been geeking out about – what they may have discovered. So we’re going to be bringing monthly favorites to the blog! They’ll be a collection of both of our favorites, and we hope that you’ll share yours in the comments!

At risk of sounding utterly cliche, it’s crazy to me that here we are, at the end of June! Where is the summer going?? Right now, in WNY, we’re experiencing a bit of a heat wave so I’ve been embracing the artificially cooled oasis that is my home. Conveniently, for the most part, I’m essentially an indoor cat, so I’m not missing out too much! 🙂 With it being so hot out, we’ve both been enjoying a lot of television, movies, and books. Okay, I suppose that isn’t much different than any other time of year, but our favorites this month seems to be predominantly entertainment.

Books

A Court of Mist and Fury – I’ve mentioned this book before, but I’m now nearly done with it (will likely finish it today) and OMG I am fully committed to this story and the series as a whole! It is just SO GOOD!!! It’s such a good book – intense, even humorous at points, steamy as hell and just all around a highly enjoyable read! PS – if you haven’t read it yet, Amazon currently has the hard cover for $6!!

The Cuckoos Calling – Missy is currently reading the first book in the Cormoran Strike series from Robert Galbraith (A.K.A. JK Rowling) because I repeatedly harassed her to, and she finally gave in. Apparently its a winner (go figure…) because she’s liking it enough to include it in her favorites. It has elements that remind her of BBC Sherlock, and in general shes a mystery lover, so I don’t know what took her so long!

Video Games

Kingdom Hearts – Missy recently got a PS4 after spending years in the XBOX world and has since then, re-emerged herself into one of her favorite games from years ago: Kingdom Hearts. She beat the game on her old PS2, but is finding it even more enjoyable on the PS4, and is preparing herself for the upcoming release of Kingdom Hearts 3. The premise of fighting the evil Heartless feels fairly relevant in our current climate…perhaps too much so.

The Sims 4 SeasonsWe recently published our review of the new expansion pack and while yes, we gave it a lower review than you might expect from two Sims fans, we still have a lot of love for the game (the low score was primarily for glitches, not in regard to our like or dislike of the game itself). We’ve both been playing here and there since our review went up and I’ve gotta say that I really enjoy what seasons adds to the game!

Movies

Guardians of The Galaxy – I’ll admit that I don’t watch very many movies. I think its my attention span (or lack thereof), but I find myself more drawn to television than movies most of the time. However, there’s always a TON of movies that I want to see and I finally sat down to watch Guardians of the Galaxy. I liked it a lot more than I expected to!! Groot is just frigging adorable, and we both enjoyed the music throughout the film.

Television

The Office – Another suggestion from the elder sister: Missy is working her way through watching The Office for the very first time. This show is full of so many hilarious and often ridiculous moments how can you not like it??

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – I needed a new series to watch after finishing The Office (though I’d admit, I was tempted to just start right over again), so I started watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. I can say that I like it enough to include it in a favorites, and that it has been an entertaining watch, but I will admit that I don’t see it being a classic for me. It’s definitely funny though, and I’m enjoying all the different actors who have guest started so far (I’m still in season 1). I’m still looking for a good sitcom to watch though so if you’ve got any suggestions, please let me know!!

Noms

Chameleon Cold Brew – I’ve been drinking Chameleon Cold Brew for months now. I started drinking cold brew after reading that it is far more stomach friendly than traditional coffee. I have many issues when it comes to my digestive system and I had been having issues getting along with my morning coffee for awhile. Trying cold brew has been LIFE CHANGING!! I’ve tried making my own but it just didn’t compare to the Chameleon Cold Brew concentrate. It’s not bitter (though I’ll admit that I’ve gotten a bad batch on occasion), and I love how easy it is to make an iced coffee every morning. The Mocha version is excellent but often sold out, so I typically stick to the basic black. I just wish it was easier to find because there’s only two stores that I know of that carry it anymore near me and one is an hour away!

Crunchwrap Surpremes – Missy feels like she’s rediscovered Taco Bell, and honestly can’t remember the last time she had Taco Bell before recently, but she’s given in to the cliche gamer stereotype by falling hard for crunchwrap supremes. For someone who is indecisive, they’re the perfect presentation – soft taco and hard taco all in one. Nacho cheese… lettuce. The whole works. All packaged as the neatest taco comfort food there is. It’s good that the nearest Taco Bell is a bit of a drive or they’d likely be a far more frequent indulgence.

Beauty

Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden – I sometimes go through ruts where I don’t touch my makeup at all. Sometimes I just feel lazy, uninspired or too crappy health wise to play around much. Lately though, I’ve been enjoying playing with some color on my eyes again and this primer potion from Urban Decay has been AWESOME for that. Their Primer Potion is an OG product for me. It was one of the very first “high end” beauty products that I remember purchasing and I love it now just as I did so many years ago. I’ve tried other brands but honestly, none compare to Urban Decay. Right now I’m using their tinted primer potion in Eden which is great because not only does it provide a base for keeping shadows in place, but it also evens out the color of my eyelids giving a great starting color to apply my shadows on. This stuff seriously works wonders at keeping shadow on my greasy eyelids – even in this heat! I have nothing bad to say about this little magic product!

Top Ten TV Characters I Loathe

tvcharactersIloathe

Last week we said goodbye to my favorite NCIS character: Abby Sciuto. I was really bummed when I first heard that she was going to be leaving the show after playing such an integral role in it for 15 years. I’ve honestly struggled to understand how the show could feasibly continue without her, especially after the team has seen so much loss in one way or another, in recent years (Ziva and DiNozzo being the most poignant departures). But alas, the show must go on…

I often think about the television characters that I love. The ones that make me laugh, or cry, or whom I just feel some sort of connection to. It’s easy to think about all the characters who are such an important part of the team, and it can be difficult to picture a show without certain characters. This might be an unpopular opinion, but while I wasn’t a huge fan of Derek Shepard (sorry!), it was still really hard for me to envision the show without him. Some shows continue along after the loss of significant characters, and others don’t. I know that many still aren’t over losing Derek. I get it, even if I don’t feel the same sentiment towards his highness. 😉

But today, I’m not looking to talk about my favorite characters or the ones who have had a strong impact on myself, or the program in which they exist. Today, I want to talk about the characters I loathe. The ones that make me cringe – who, no matter how many times I’ve seen a particular episode, still irritate the piss outta me. Read More »

Sunday Seven – May 20th 2018

thesundayseven

The Sunday Seven is a vaguely regular series where we share seven things that are on our radar in some way. They might be articles we enjoyed reading, a new food we’ve become obsessed with, a television show we need to talk about, or a new product we’ve discovered. There’s really no rhyme or reason – just think of it as our casual Sunday chat.

1 – The Office – I have to start this post off with a show I’ve become fully, and utterly obsessed with. I know – I’m WAY late to the party on this one. I honestly can’t explain why I never watched before. I had seen episodes here and there, but had never seen the series all the way though. Let me tell you, I am SO glad that I am finally doing just that. I’m just starting season six as we speak and OMG – this show is so good!! It’s painfully stupid, hilarious and at some points even sweet and heartwarming. I’m honestly surprised at the layers to this show, and just how much I’ve grown to like it. I’m definitely a big fan now. I’m just sorry it took me so long to become one. Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.
